apt-preferences

By using this file (/etc/apt/preferences), it becomes possible to track the stable or testing branches by default, and falling back to unstable if a package does not exist in testing/stable. very nice, much better than having to use unstable on the whole. This file is not apparent from day-to-day install/system use, but is well-documented in the man pages and at the debian wiki.
