- IS
- Information System. The subject of this class and most other things in the Informatics program.
- Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)
- These process business transactions sich as orders, time cards, payments, and reservations.
- Management Information Systems (MIS)
- Uses transaction data to produce reports to management with the data necesssary to run the business.
- Decision Support Systems (DSS)
- Help various decision makers identify all options and to help choose between them, given the input.
- Executive Information systmes (EIS)
- Expert Systems
- capture and reproduce the knowledge of an expert problem solver and attempt to approximate their decsison-making process
- Office Automation systems

- Systems Owners
- those that will be fronting the bill for the creation and maintenance of an IS. typically management.
- Systems Users
- those that use the system. split into internal systems users, those that are a part of the company the system exists in, and external systems users, typically customers and others that do not have a large stake in the organization that the system is a part of.
- Systems Designers
- those who architect the system before its development. includes DB admins, network architects, graphic artists, security experts, and technology specialists.
- Systems Builders
- often the same as system designers in smaller organizations- but can be a different category in a larger environment. Includes programmers and sysadmins.
- Systems Analysts
- essentially those that are called in to fix problems. intended to bridge gap between information systems and business needs.

globalization is a factor to consider in IS development - new systems should consider internationalization, and be able to deal with international finance.
e-commerce
three basic types of e-commerce systems:
- marketing
i.e. corporate websites, etc.
- business-to-consumer
i.e. online vendors.
- business-to-business
i.e. online procurement, etc.
security and privacy
an important factor. systems must be secure.
knowledge asset management
a type of system which aims to become a repository of knowledge for its users. something like a wiki would be an example of knowledge asset management.
total quality management
basically a name for being very careful about quality at every step of the process. being anal.
business process redesign
