Lab 3: Dialog & Databases - Compare and Contrast

question 8, part a

we’re told to search for nytimes articles in the last 6 months dealing tiwh the FCC regulating IP telephony. or ‘net-phones’ as it is phrased in the lab assignment directly.

Dialog

looked thru file 4. nothing. found file 471- NYTimes fulltext. yes, this is where we want to be. This should work. Should.

We were actually unable to find the article we found in proquest, because it actually lacks discriptors and indentifiers. Having found it in proquest, we were able to locate it in Dialog by searching for author and date. It exists, but without descriptors. Fulltext only. Annoying, epecially if we had to pay $100 to find this out.

UW Databases

went to proquest. in electronic newspapers, went to NY Times, limited date, searched for “⚠ VoIP AND FCC”. no results. Suggestion given of “Federal Communications Commission (company/org) AND Internet Telephony”. Pulled up 3 articles.

UW Databases Searched
ProQuest Newsstand (complete)
Successful Search Terms
( Federal Communications Commission AND Internet telephony) AND PMID(7818) AND PDN(>4/21/2005) AND PDN(<10/21/2005)

Articles Returned

  1. F.C.C. Eases High-Speed Access Rules
Stephen Labaton. New York Times (Late Edition (East Coast)). New York, N.Y.: Aug 6, 2005. p. C.1
  1. New Rules on Net Service May Hurt Some Providers
Vikas Bajaj. New York Times (Late Edition (East Coast)). New York, N.Y.: Aug 6, 2005. p. C.4
  1. Internet Phone Services Told To Offer 911 Emergency Calls
Matt Richtel. New York Times (Late Edition (East Coast)). New York, N.Y.: May 20, 2005. p. C.8

These are not all specifically about our topic. The first one, notably, is mostly about regulations on the baby bells who wish to provide internet access. The last one is the one we are after.

Google Scholar

Not expecting great results from this one. Searched using Advanced Scholar Search. Limited publication to “New York Times”. Could not limit date range to requested, so Searched for “Internet Telephony”. No results. Cleared out “Internet Telephony”. A few results. This database clearly does not adequately index the NY Times.

nytimes.com

used bugmenot to grab a login to NYTimes.com. thanks! from here, used advanced search function located here.

Could not get satisfactory search results- we are looking for the intersection of FCC and internet phone. We can’t be specific enough here.

google

Used the search FCC regulation internet telephony site:nytimes.com inurl:2005. Doesn’t limit things entirely to the date range possible, but at least keeps it in this year. Google returns 66 results. Picking through them, the top few results are not specifically about IP phone regulation but are actually much more accurate than those returned from nytimes.com. The 6th result is a successful match.

a9

Couldn’t get a9 to adequately restrict to nytimes articles through advanced search. Weird, as on the front page (simple search) there is an option to constrain to NYtimes.com. The kicker is that a lot of articles hosted at cnet.nytimes.com were returned. It seems as if the date restriction worked by restricting to “updated in last 6 months,” surprisingly.
